Sneak Peek Directly from the Session 5 Chair, Dr. Raymond Bond!

The ambition to become paperless in medicine can be both disruptive yet provide new opportunities for innovation in digital electrocardiography. Clinicians have been reading ECGs for approximately a century and they have accepted the approach of reading temporal ECG traces on paper. Whilst researchers have developed a myriad of novel methods to visualise the ECG, these have not yet been successfully adopted. However, if we are aiming to visualise the ECG on Tablet PCs and touch-screen devices, then there is an opportunity to supplement these conventional ECG traces with other visualisations as well as improving the interpreter’s experience using interactive tools that enable a deeper interrogation of the ECG and indeed the patient.

In this session, we will explore three key research topics:

  1. the new and emerging PDF-ECG paradigm,
  2. the use of interactive computing to augment ECG interpretation, and
  3. visual and data analytics to provide insight into an overload of ambulatory ECG data.
