Session VIII:  Dr. Michele Pelter, Chair & Dr. Loriano Galeotti, Co-Chair
Identifying, Diagnosing and Guiding Invasive Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation From Wearable Devices to Electrocardiographic Imaging to Guide Ablation
Part 1: ECG and Wearable Devices for Detecting Heart Rate, A-fib and Other Waveforms

Wearable technology to track activity, heart rate, sleep, exercise are very popular. According to Forbes (2016) just under 50 million wearable devices were shipped in 2015 and over 125 million units are expected to ship in 2019. There is growing interest in expanding wearable technology to new markets and applications. This session will explore ECG and wearable devices for detecting heart rate, atrial fibrillation and other waveforms. Presentations in this session will approach this topic from scientific, industry and regulatory perspectives. The first presentation will describe a comparative research study examining photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals from a wrist-worn device to that of ECG and pulse-oximetry signals from bedside hospital monitors for detection of atrial fibrillation in patients with ischemic stroke (Dr. Kais Gadhoumi, Post-Doctoral Scholar UCSF). The second presentation will review clinical studies for atrial fibrillation detection using wearable device compared to long term monitoring from Holter and ECG patch devices (Marco Peluso, CEO Qardio). The final presentation in this session will cover updates on wearable medical devices from the Food and Drug Administration (Linda Ricci, FDA).
