Session Spotlight - 2018 ISCE Annual Conference

Sessions III and IV
Chair: Dr. Robbert Zusterzeel, Chair, Co-Chair: Dr. Brett Atwater

Device therapies for heart failure and sudden cardiac death
Part 1: Academic/FDA perspective and LBBB challenge
Part 2:  Industry perspective

This session will be focused on heart failure, one of the most common diseases worldwide. Patients with heart failure have high mortality, most often through mechanisms of sudden cardiac death, and appropriate treatment is therefore important. This usually includes some form of device therapy such as cardiac resynchronization therapy or an implantable defibrillator. The effectiveness and safety of device therapies, however, depends heavily on patient-specific factors, such as the presence of a left bundle branch block (LBBB) for benefit from cardiac resynchronization therapy.

This will be a multidisciplinary session with presentations by clinicians, FDA, industry and academia. Specific topics covered are: 1. Predictors of benefit from cardiac resynchronization therapy including LBBB; 2. Criteria for the presence of LBBB and the ISCE 2018 ECG initiative with data from the MADIT-CRT trial for the improvement of LBBB diagnosis; and 3. Predictors of sudden cardiac death and the role of implantable defibrillators.
